Mary Motorhead

Video & Projection Design for Opera

In the monodrama Mary Motorhead, a convicted murderer invites us to hear her secret history - the disappointments and betrayals that shaped her life - in the hope that it may shine some light upon the darkness of her actions. This first production of the opera was presented as a part of Beth Morrison Project’s Next Gen festival, dedicated to discovering new composers and their work.

The video design featured a single bird’s eye live camera and motion tracking which captured the image of the singer from above, transposing her live movements into a prerendered stylized prison security space. The design consciously created a fracture between the real space of the theatre and the psychologically imprisoned state of the protagonist.
